The overall lesson that led to this drawing was a study of arctic animals, and how they differ from animals in other parts of the world. This specific assignment was an exercise in following directions. It appears that the artist was able to follow the directions very well, because this design looks exactly like a walrus. The details are very striking as well, ranging from the top notch down to the icicles at the bottom. This animal also appears to be thinking over his next move, by the look in his eyes.
