Morning Star, October 20, 2013, pg. 6 Albion lost one of its most distinguished sports figures with the death of Ulysses Curtis (1926-2013) on October 6. He was part of the national football championship teams of the Toronto Argonauts in 1950 and 1952. He is in the Florida A & M Hall of Fame, as well as the Albion High School Wall of Fame. It was an honor to have known him and his family, and his legacy will remain. We wrote about Ulysses in the June 15, 1997, and September 12, 2010 editions of this column. These may be accessed on the www.albionmich.com website. In the May 5 edition of this column we featured a November, 1920 postcard photograph of children at Austin Elementary School standing in front. Another postcard photo at Austin was given to me by Karon (Willey) Phillips now of Tekonsha. Her aunt, Ilah V. Haynes (1904-1922) is the first girl in the second row, and is shown wearing a checkered jacket. She was the daughter of George and Mary (Ford) Haynes who came to Albion in 1906. From our Historical Notebook this week we present that photo. Alas, no other child has been identified. Judging from Ilah's birth year, we would assume this photo would date circa 1915. Does anyone else have this photo in their old family albums? If you know the identities of anyone, please let me know.
