Morning Star, June 24, 2018, pg. 13 Back in 1955, the Albion Evening Recorder ran a weekly "Clerk of the Week"feature which honored one of the clerks in Albion’s business establishments. The series ran for several weeks, and each week’s winning clerk received a variety of perks. This week we feature the 5th Clerk of the Week, Robert Shelters (1926-2013), who at the time was working at the Tom Maker IGA Supermarket at 200 N. Clinton St. This was published in the August 4, 1955 edition of The Recorder as follows: "For the fourth time in five weeks of the current "Clerk of the Week"contest, a man was chosen. Bob Shelters, assistant manager of Maker’s Market, is this week’s winner. He is standing at the left examining some frozen vegetables. At the right is Micky Ells, store manager. A 1943 graduate of Albion High School, Mr. Shelters was formerly employed at Penney’s and the Service Caster Co. before starting at Maker’s last December. This week’s winner worked at the Service Caster Co. right up to the time the firm closed down last winter. He decided that would be a good time to start his grocery career, and he was hired for his present position when the Albion store opened last December [December 11, 1954]. The friendly assistant manager lives at 403 Irwin Avenue with his wife Dorothy and their two daughters, Joan, 2 ½, and Janet, 8 months. In recognition for winning the "Clerk of the Week"contest, Mr. Shelters will be a dinner guest of the Parker Inn, along with his wife. They will receive two tickets to the Bohm Theater, City Cab service, a corsage from Hubert’s, a radio interview over WALM, and baby sitter service for the evening." From our Historical Notebook this week we present that photograph of Bob as appeared in the Recorder in 1955. How many of our readers remember Tom Maker’s IGA Foodliner Supermarket on N. Clinton St.? If the "clerk of the week"series ran today, who would be chosen, and what would the prizes be? Robert Shelters, Clerk of the Week and Micky Ells, Manager August 4, 1955
