Albion 100 Years Ago - SEPTEMBER 1924

Morning Star, September 6, 2024, Pg. 6 [First time published with same date as the Recorder newspaper on a Friday]

We continue with our theme of "Albion, 100 Years Ago." September 2, 1924: "Troop Three is Now Registered. Troop 3 Boy Scouts of Albion, is now registered at National Headquarters. The scoutmaster has at last been found; Fred A. Sadger, 715 N. Ann St. having been picked for this important position."

September 3, 1924: "Creamery at Homer is Hit by Fire Today. Fire of unknown origin did about $2,000 damage to Campbell Dairy Products when the front of the building was burned, together with the roof, this morning at 11 o'clock."

Albion Public School Advertisement. "School opens Monday, Sept. 8th. Non-resident students are required to pay the tuition of $35 per semester in advance. Tuition in the 7th and 8th grades is $25 per semester, payable in advance."

September 5, 1924: Monday, September 1. "Rev. C. H. Callahan officiated at a wedding ceremony in Laingsburg which united in marriage Mr. Leon Claucherty, Fitch St., and Miss Bertha Quigg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Quigg, Highland Ave."

September 6, 1924. "The Albion Colored Civic League, in a recent meeting voted to make the Emancipation Day celebration, held August 1, at Victory Park, an annual affair. W. L. Beck is the chairman of the committee on arrangements."

September 8, 1924. "Three Albionites Sent to Prison. Three residents of Albion pled guilty this morning to a charge of violation of the liquor laws. John Myeschod and William Okoletanko were asked to pay fines of $100 each and spend 60 days in the Detroit House of Correction. Mrs. Bernice Banouski was assessed a fine of $300 and sentenced to serve 30 days in the county jail at Marshall."

September 9, 1924, "Fifty-six alien residents of Albion are expected to take out their first naturalization papers in the very near future, as the result of a canvass of the community just completed by the Americanization committee of the Albion Chamber of Commerce."

"Work has begun on the excavation for the new theater on the east side of S. Superior St., at the Center St. intersection, for George Bohm."

September 11, 1924: "A one-story brick building to be used as an automobile garage by Roscoe DeWeese is being constructed at 118 W. Porter St., on the site of the old Airdome Theater, by Perry Sharp."

September 12, 1924. "Laird Gets Out of Ministry as Well as Church. An announcement was made late Thursday afternoon at the meeting of the Michigan Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to the effect that Dr. John W. Laird, erstwhile president of Albion College, and now writing advertisements for a department store in Washington, D. C. had withdrawn all connections with the Methodist Church."

September 13, 1924. "Two Arrested in Booze Raid Friday Night. George Twa, 802 Austin Ave., and John Puvlachich, 608 Austin Ave., were arrested late last night when a party of city and county officers raided their respective residences and found liquor on the premises of both." [Note: Twa pled guilty on September 16]

September 16, 1924. "As the result of a raid made upon her residence at 608 Carson St. early this morning, Mrs. Mary Kersuk was arrested on a charge of keeping a place where liquor is sold."

September 24, 1924, "Mrs. Bernice Bernowski of this city pled guilty to violation of the liquor law, and was sentenced to spend 60 days in the Detroit House of Corrections and pay costs of $100."
