Albion 100 Years Ago - JANUARY 1925

Morning Star, January 3, 2025, pg. 8

Happy New Year! We continue with our theme of "Albion, 100 Years Ago." For our newer readers, the date given is the date the article was originally published, not necessarily the date the event occurred. January 2, 1925. "A fiery cross was burned Wednesday night about midnight, near Alumni field, the college athletic grounds. It is supposed local members of the Ku Klux Klan erected the cross, the purpose being unknown."

January 3, 1925. "Nina E. Senters was granted a divorce from Theron Senters in circuit court at Jackson Friday by Judge Williams, on the grounds of cruelty and non-support. The couple were married in Jackson, April 3, 1915 and lived together until August 11, 1922. There are no children. They formerly lived in Albion."

January 8, 1925. "The new garage just south of the Maple City Dairy company's plant, to house the local Buick agency, is completed with the exception of putting in the floor."

January 12, 1925. "Albion Student Gets $2,000 for Theft Tip. The $2,000 reward offered by the post office department for the arrest and conviction of the leader of the gang who robbed a mail train of $2 million at Rondout, IL last summer, will be paid in May to Wayne Schaefer, Battle Creek, 18-year old Albion College student it was revealed at Battle Creek Saturday. Schaefer entered the post office at Albion to mail a letter to his mother and noticed a large poster on the wall of the office captioned "$2,000 reward, dead or alive." Becoming curious. Schaefer walked to the poster and examined the pictures printed upon it. He discovered that they were those of a man and woman who rented an apartment from his father. Schaefer raced to Battle Creek and visited police headquarters. The arrest of the man and the woman followed."

January 12, 1925. Mrs. Carrie Twa was arraigned before Justice W. S. Price Saturday afternoon on a charge of keeping a disorderly place, after Chief of Police Clyde Stoddard had placed her under arrest at her home on Austin Avenue. This is the second time Mrs. Twa has been arraigned here on this charge."

January 26, 1925. "Sheldon Memorial Hospital has been placed on the list of approved hospitals compiled by the American College of Surgeons, Chicago."

January 27, 1925. "Auto-hubs manufactured by the hub-plant of the Hayes Wheel Company in this city are being displayed in the window of the Chamber of Commerce offices this week. James Grace of the Chamber states that these exhibits by Albion manufacturers are of great educational value, in that they enable Albion people to talk more intelligently concerning home manufactured products."

January 28, 1925. "The Maple City Auto Company, the Buick agent in Albion, will throw open its new garage building in the city Market Place Thursday."

January 29, 1925. "Two Arrested in Springport Liquor Case. Verne Leightner and Frank Coons were arrested Wednesday afternoon and when arraigned here in circuit court today will plead guilty to the manufacture and transportation of intoxicating liquor. Disclosure of their alleged illicit liquor traffic was made last Friday night when Leightner solicited the aid of Bruce Halleck, president of the village, and Deputy Peacock while Leightner was trying to drive his car laden with 94 bottles of the home-brew out of his yard enroute to the volunteer fireman's party. Leightner is secretary of the fire department organization." January 30: "Each of the respondents received a fine of $25 and costs of $5."

January 30, 1925: "Caretaker for Victory Park is Suggested. Chamber of Commerce to Make Recommendations to the City Council. It is the opinion the appointment of a caretaker is most important before any permanent improvements can be made at Victory Park. Last summer there was considerable damage done at Victory Park by wrecking the ovens and benches that were placed there for the convenience of the tourists and local citizens, and if a caretaker had been on hand these articles would not have been misused."

January 31, 1925. "Former Albion Girl is Killed by her Husband. It became known today that Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hewitt, living south of Albion near Condit, received a message Wednesday to the effect that their daughter, Mrs. Redford Merchant, formerly Miss Lydia Hewitt, had been killed by her husband, who then committed suicide, the tragedy occurring at their home in Daytona, Florida."

"A 10-inch reptile belonging to the lizard family was captured this morning by George Haynes when it came out of a 5-inch pipe being used to flood a skating rink in Victory Park, the creature coming through the pipe from the River. It is believed to be a water salamander and is dark-colored with light spots."
