Morning Star, August 4, 2024, pg. 5 We continue with our theme: Albion-100 Years Ago.," August 1, 1924. "George A. Bohm to Build New Theatre Here. Albion is to have a new playhouse, one that will be in harmony with the consistent growth of the city. George A. Bohm, owner of the Censor Theatre, has let a contract to Perry Sharp, local contractor, and ground will be broken about August 15 for the new theatre costing about $55,000 which will be built on the east side of S. Superior St. on the present vacant lots between Smith & Lathwell's establishment, and Rhoton's five and ten cent store." "Emancipation Day Parade Draws Crowd. Superior St. is Lined With Spectators and Stores Present Gala Appearance as Long Procession Opens the Day's Festivities. William L. Beck of Albion was the chairman of the decorating committee and ably assisting him were the Misses Mary Wilson and Modest Butts, as well as others." August 4, 1924: "Devereaux Has Fire Creamery Destroyed. Overheated exhaust pipes on a gasoline engine totally destroyed the creamery of Frank Martin and a two-story residence at Devereaux late Saturday afternoon, with a loss estimated at from $10k to $15k." August 5, 1924. "Townsend Burial to be at Concord. Funeral services will be held Thursday for Charles E. Townsend, former U.S. Senator who died here [Jackson] Sunday night. Burial will be at Concord, birthplace and boyhood home of the Senator." August 7, 1924. Headline: "Much Damage by Twister Near Here Wednesday, Several Farms North of City in Storm Path." August 18, 1924. "New Building is Announced For Recorder. A contract was let today to Perry T. Sharp of this city for building a new home for The Albion Evening Recorder, and work will be started this week. The location is on W. Center St, on the same side of the street as C. S. Tucker's store. The building should be ready for occupancy before December 31." August 19, 1924. The first installation of officers of the new Albion unit of the Metropolitan club was held Monday in the rooms of No. 1 fire station, with the following men taking their places: President, Deputy Sheriff George U. McCarty; vice president, A. J. Wolfinger, captain of the fire department volunteers; secretary-treasurer Donald Gilbert, volunteer fireman." August 20, 1924. "Woman Arrested in Liquor Raid. Arrested Tuesday night when her home at 726 Austin Ave. was raided, Mrs. Bernice Boernowski waived examination in Justice L. T. Wright's court this morning and was bound over to the circuit court on a charge of maintaining a place for selling intoxicants and having liquor in her possession." August 22, 1924. "Word has been received here of the death of a former resident of this community, Daniel M. Babcock, which occurred at Vacaville, CA August 17. Mr. Babcock, who was about 83 years old, had made his home in the vicinity of Albion practically all of his life prior to removing to CA about twelve years ago. His farm bordered on the Babcock School property, four miles south of Albion. Babcock School was named for his father, Amos Babcock a pioneer of that section." August 26, 1924. Headline: "Albion College Watchman an Attack Victim. Herman Wohl, While Going His Usual Rounds, is Struck on Head by Club and Four Men Take His clock Away From Him." "August 27, 1924. "Union Steel Products Charged With Killing Fish. A warrant has been issued by Justice L. T. Wright summoning officials of the Union Steel Products Company to his court to answer to a charge of emptying poisonous waste material into the sewer which drains into the Kalamazoo River, killing many fish. Last week Thursday afternoon hundreds of suckers, bass and pickerel were killed by a solution of sodium cyanide entering the river when USP emptied out the tanks in the nickel-plating department of the factory." "Norman H. Wiener this morning bid in a chattel mortgage amounting to $9,862.13 which had been held by himself on the tracks, cars, and other above-ground paraphernalia of the People's Coal Mining Company."
