ANTHONY SCHOOL
Morning Star, July 21, 2024, pg. A7
Many years ago, our educational system included rural country schools which dotted the landscape for many years. When these schools were annexed into neighboring city schools in the late 1950s and 1960s, the country school phenomenon became a part of history. There remain great memories however, for those persons who attended a "country school."
This week we'd like feature one of the Albion area's country schools, Anthony School. Erected in the 1880s, it was located on the southeast corner of F Drive North and 24 Mile Road in Sheridan Township. The school was named after the Anthony family. Thomas Anthony (1847-1906) donated the land upon which the schoolhouse was built. His father Silas (1787-1885) had settled the 250-acre farm in 1865.
This schoolhouse was used continuously until its district voters approved annexation into the Albion Public Schools on April 26, 1965 by a vote of 24 to 16. Final classes were held in June, 1965. The former Anthony School building was transformed into a private residence until it burned in January, 1989, and was demolished.
