GALE/SHELDON DESCENDANTS

Morning Star, February 16, 1997, pg. 17

Occasionally we hear from descendants of 19th century Albion families searching for their histories. We recently had the honor to correspond with a descendant of the Gale and Sheldon families--two prominent 19th century Albion surnames. Helen Lucina (Sheldon) Kerr is 93 years old, and lives in Mooresvile, Indiana. Her father Rev. George F. Sheldon was the son of Frederick W. and Lucina (Gale) Sheldon. George pastored the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, but was born and raised in Albion. George’s father Frederick was a brother of 19th century banker James W. Sheldon, and operated tannery here with John Fanning. Lucina was a daughter of George and Harriet (Stone) Gale, and was a sister of Orlando Charles Gale whose descendants still live in this area.

Helen’s son James Sheldon Kerr and wife Virginia have compiled Helen’s memoirs and genealogy, and have sent a copy to me. In one portion she writes of a visit to Albion early in this century: “I remember where we went. That was where my grandmother Sheldon (Lucina) had lived down the street from the Gale house. That was the other side of that family. We went to their beautiful home. Papa (George F. Sheldon) was buried in the Gale lot in Riverside Cemetery.” The house of course was the O. H. Gale home on the corner of N. Eaton and W. Mulberry Streets.

We have been able to help Mrs. Kerr locate “long lost” Gale cousins here in and Sheldon cousins in California. Albion has a rich heritage, and it is letters like this that help people discover their rich heritage that began here in our community.

From our Historical Notebook this week we present a 1993 photograph of Helen Lucina (Sheldon) Kerr (1903-1997), and a photograph of her grandmother, Lucina (Gale) Sheldon (1836-1901). [Internet version postscript: Helen Sheldon Kerr died on April 29, 1997 in Indiana at the age of 94, two months after this article was written. She was buried in Elkhart, Indiana in the Rice Cemetery there.]
