Morning Star, November 29, 2024, pg. 7 We continue with our theme of "Albion, 100 Years Ago." December 3, 1924. "The old interurban freight house north of the interurban station, used in recent years as a poultry house by L. J. Shields, has been torn down to make way for the new Buick garage being erected by Perry Sharp for Dan Birdsall and David H. McKinney." December 4, 1924. "Nicholas Kostianes of the Albion Confectionary made application for his second citizenship papers at Marshall today." "Oscar Hubbard, Former Commander of Hollingsworth Post G.A.R., Albion Resident Since 1866, Succumbs to Long Illness this Morning. Mr. Hubbard was one of the charter members." December 6, 1924. Excerpts of article: "Dr. Washington Gardner Injured in Auto Mishap. Dr. Gardner was injured at the national capital Friday in an automobile accident and is now a patient in one of the hospitals of that city. Dr. Gardner was riding in an automobile when the machine was struck by a street-car. Mrs. Washington Gardner has been an invalid since an accident occurring several years ago at Washington when she sustained a fall." December 9, 1924. "The business and editorial offices of the Albion Evening Recorder will not move to the new building on W. Center St. until the middle of the week." December 15, 1924. "The fire department made a run about 7:30 Sunday evening to the East Ward School near the city limits on E. Michigan Avenue, where a small fire had started in the roof from sparks from the chimney. The damage was probably less than five dollars." December 16, 1924. "A petition is being passed among Albion citizens by James H. Smith asking the state highway authorities to extend the M-34 highway north from Homer as far as the Benham corners over the route of M-60, and eventually from there through Albion to the north. Those backing the move argue that this route, instead of the Irwin Avenue road, would be the best between Albion and Homer in that two expensive bridges and a couple of bad railroad crossings would be avoided." December 20, 1924. "The tragedy at the N. Eaton St. hill Friday afternoon, when Hartford Burns, 12-year-old Albion school boy, met a terrible death beneath the wheels of a Michigan Central flyer while coasting, will stop the use, for a coasting [sledding and skating] place, of this hill and several others in the city that are just as dangerous, in the opinion of local authorities." December 23, 1924. "The City of Albion, by E. R. Loud, city attorney, Monday began suit in circuit court at Marshall against Mrs. Mary McClintic and John E. O'Connor, under chapter 75 of act 124 of the public acts of 1915, to condemn property to extend North Ionia St. in this city." December 26, 1924. "One fire alarm was turn in on Christmas, coming at 10:30 in the morning from the Liberty Café on N. Superior St. Water pipes in the basement had frozen and in thawing them out the floor was ignited." December 27, 1924. Headline: "Michigan Electric Railway Will be Unable to Pay Interest. Interurban Lines are Compelled to Default on $179,000 of Bond Obligations That Will be Due on January 1." December 31, 1924. "Carrie E. Twa of Albion began suit for divorce Tuesday against George Twa. They were married September 3, 1916, and separated December 26, 1924. Mrs. Twa alleges extreme cruelty. She cited that her husband is addicted to the use of liquor and has been convicted and served 60 days in the Detroit House of Corrections for violating the prohibition law. She says she thought this would correct his habits but since his release he has drank more than ever before."
